Farm diversification Stats

The Farm Business Survey (FBS) for England has published a report showing the extent of the growth of diversification in agriculture for 2014/15. Diversification is increasingly being used as a way of diversifying income streams, increasing sustainability and increasing profit in a competitive and changing market.

The below stats show the number of farms utilising some of the more common types of diversification:

Letting buildings for non-farming use - 41%

Processing/retailing of farm produce - 10%

Sport & Recreation - 12%

Tourist accommodation & catering - 5%

Renewable energy - 18%

Other Diversified enterprises - 9%

These diversification stats do not include diversification of some of the more traditional agricultural work such as alternative crops and alternative livestock.
