Established in 1989, the farm, turned ice cream factory, uses the milk from their own dairy herd of 45 Friesian cows to manufacture real dairy ice cream and kefir products, which are distributed to York and beyond.
At the Leisure F&B Expo, on 6th & 7th November at the NEC, Birmingham, you’ll get the chance to come face-to-face with this fantastic company, who could really add that ice-cold touch to your hospitality offerings. Who Are Yorvale?
Yorvale Farm was purchased from the council by Ian and Lesley Buxton, in 1998, and it was at this time the expansion into purpose-built manufacturing facilities on the farm started. They now have 1350m² of space in which to process delicious, fresh, and nutritious cow’s milk which moves just 100 metres from cow to dairy each day to be made into Yorvale ice cream, kefir drinking yogurt, and frozen kefir.
Starting out in 1989 making 12 flavours of ice cream and 90 litres an hour, Yorvale now have 40 flavours of ice cream, 10 flavours of sorbet, a non-dairy ice cream and a kefir drink, and their capacity has increased to 1,900 litres per hour. Today their thriving business, using the milk from a dairy herd of 45 Holstein Friesian cows, provides employment for a team of 21, including themselves. Due to their dedication, the farm has seen countless awards for enterprise, as well as their produce being sold nationally.
Yorvale’s Promise
Instead of celebrating with a party, Yorvale decided they would like to help certain local charities in as many ways as they could. So far, this has seen members of the team volunteering at St. Leonard’s Hospice sorting centre in Acomb, as well as donating various ice cream related prizes to raffles for Farming Community Network, Antibiotic Research and York Carers.
Ice cream was given to Leeds Children’s Hospital for their ‘prom’ night, and also to Bereaved Children’s Support in York for one of their free drop-in sessions. A year’s supply of ice cream was also donated as a prize at an ‘Auction of promises’ organized to fund a unique centre for disabled children in York.
Owner and director of Yorvale, Lesley Buxton said, “we asked members of the team which charities they felt we should be helping, so the pledge was really personal to us.”
The Yorvale team also have plans to volunteer at Mind Fest in September, a free music event organised by York Mind, who support local people struggling with mental health conditions.
