SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND FOR LEAF'S OPEN FARM SUNDAY

This year's Open Farm Sunday has seen thousands of visitors all over the country enjoy a day out with their families to learn more about the world of farming.

With the sun on their side, adults and children alike ventured to their nearest farm to enjoy a variety of events involving all kinds of crops, livestock and tractors. Farmers from all over the country happily explained their techniques both old and new, while an eager audience listened carefully.

From traditional Suffolk Punch horses to using drones or satellite-guided tractors to maximise productivity, both the past and the future of farming were presented to thousands of receptive visitors. Families jumped on tractors, witnessed the farm’s day-to-day ensue and enjoyed the fresh air in an unforgettable day in the British countryside.

One of the many farms taking part in the initiative was Oaklands Farm at Aldeby, near Beccles. The Burroughs family has an award-winning dairy farm, which is why Lindsay Miller decided to host the farm’s event. Lindsay wanted to explain the whole process from the calf to the shelf by opening the farm and hosting demonstrations as well as give a variety of talks highlighting the importance of animal welfare within the world of farming.

“I think it is important that we start educating the general public about farming, because we get quite a lot of bad press and by learning the basics about what goes on, especially with the low milk prices being in the news recently, they can see the work that goes into putting a pint on their table,” said Miller.

The initiative is managed by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), an organisation that promotes sustainable agriculture, food and farming. The objective of events like Open Farm Sunday is that of building an understanding in the way food and farming works, by engaging the public and educating the next generations on the importance of sustainability and the environment in the world of farming.
