PLANS LODGED FOR £130M AFAN VALLEY RESORT

A scoping report about the Afan Valley Adventure Resort project has been submitted to the Neath Port Talbot Council in the preliminary stages ahead of the planning application process.

If the plans are approved, the ambitious resort will include a 100-bed hotel, 600 luxury lodge cabins, a spa and a central square filled with shops, restaurants and a wide variety of adventure sports.

The holiday destination will be situated at Afan Forest Park, near Cymmer in Wales, and expects to receive around 260,000 visitors every year once fully operational.

Northern Powerhouse Developments’ (NPD) Chairman Gavin Woodhouse along with former Center Parcs’ CEO and current NPD’s Chairman Peter Moore are the masterminds behind this ambitious project.

“The area looks tailor-made for it, the natural topography is just perfect – it’s God’s own country,” explained Moore.

“I was seeing examples everywhere of people doing adventure experiences, like in Surf Snowdonia and at the zip wire nearby – people want the buzz of adrenalin. It became clear there was appeal for adrenalin activities.”

There will be four distinct areas within the resort - Forest, Trail, Alpine and Xtreme - all of which will feature a variety of indoor and outdoor attractions akin to those environments. The park will also be home to Bear Grylls Survival Academy.

NPD hope to be able to have the hotel, spa, 400 lodges and various attractions fully operational by 2021, and the 200 remaining lodges built over the course of the next 15 years.

Head of Planning and Public Protection at Neath Port Talbot Council, Nicola Pearce, said: “An application for a scoping opinion seeks the opinion of the planning authority as to the extent of issues to be considered within the developer’s Environmental Statement.”

“The Environmental Statement would in due course accompany a planning application. The scoping opinion does not consider the merits of any proposal. As a result, these types of applications are normally dealt with under delegated powers and this is also likely to be the case with this submission.”
