A shipping container hotel? – tell me more!

The uses of shipping containers are endless. You may think their main purpose is to transport goods or house storage, but have you ever considered that they could in fact be used for holiday accommodation?

Well, that’s exactly what Stockton-on-Tees-based company, Cleveland Containers has succeeded in doing.

In 2017, Cleveland Containers was approached by Gulliver’s Theme Park Resorts to build one of its accommodation units for Gulliver's Kingdom in Matlock, Bath.

Gulliver's Kingdom is one of five theme parks from the Gulliver's Resorts family and the theme park features a variety of rides and attractions with on-site stays available.

As part of its resort, Gulliver’s required 8 bespoke sized container suites, all pirate-themed and fitted with 2 bedrooms and 1 en suite, giving anyone who visits a swashbuckling time!

Each suite can sleep up to five, with a double bed and a triple bunk bed making each room perfect for a family stay.

There are four suites on the ground floor and four on top accessible via a staircase, each spacious suite is a far cry from the standard steel container box that arrived at the Cleveland Container’s depot.

“This project was an extremely exciting challenge for us as it was the first time we had ever built anything on this scale, especially when it required such a highly creative approach. It just shows that the possibilities are endless when it comes to shipping container conversions.” - Johnathan Bulmer, Managing Director of Cleveland Containers.

The team at Gulliver’s were so impressed with the quality, speed and customer service that they received, they enquired again in 2019, needing a solution for accommodation at their Sheffield resort, Gulliver’s Valley. The theme was fairy-tale, and the final design required 10 containers to create a hotel that looked like a castle.

Walking into the castle you wouldn’t know you were inside 10 shipping containers!

There are 8 suites: 4 princess suites and 4 unicorn suites. There is 1 suite per container, and each one sleeps 2 adults and 3 children, with a bathroom and French doors leading to a patio area.

“We chose to use converted shipping containers as the speed of construction met our needs as we wanted to move quickly. We chose to come to Cleveland Containers because of our good working relationship and dealing with the offices was great.” – Julie, Managing Director of Gulliver’s Resort.

Cleveland Containers has provided a number of different solutions for modified container builds including a bespoke nature-inspired lodge transformed from a 30ft steel container.
